The Auburn Reading Circle met yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Byrnes on Spring Street. It was a Holmes afternoon and quotations formed the roll call. The ladies read the life of Holmes, and different ones read several of Holmes’ poems, “Old Ironsides” as well as extracts from many others.
50 years ago, 1959
Well-known Lewiston skater Larry Charest has been named head supervisor of the Lewiston Police Athletic League’s fancy skating program this winter.
PAL official Herve Gendreau said Charest will conduct weekly classes in figure skating. Interested boys and girls have been asked to contact Charest or sign up at the police station.
As soon as weather permits, the PAL will begin organizing various acts to perform at the annual PAL winter carnival scheduled for January or February, Gendreau said.

SACO — The Maine Aquarium on Route 1 is holding a grand opening celebration starting Friday with hot-air balloon rides beginning at 3:30 p.m. and then a chemical-free dance at the spectrum museum from 7 to 11:30 p.m. for all ages.
Fun and games are planned all day Saturday. The ribbon cutting is slated for Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
