Winterize L/A, a newly formed collaboration of municipalities, nonprofits and local businesses, is seeking community volunteers to help winterize 100 homes in Lewiston and Auburn. Volunteers will help install winterizing materials for low-income homeowners residing in the Twin Cities’ downtowns.

Winterize L/A Weekend will take place Thursday, Oct. 29, through Sunday, Nov. 1. Volunteers may choose to work just one day or all four days, and no experience is required as each Winterize L/A team will have an experienced team leader.

The teams will install weather stripping around doors and windows, seal windows with a special film that blocks drafts, caulk exterior doors and windows, foam fill cracks or gaps, and replace light bulbs with energy efficient compact flourescent light bulbs.

Winterize L/A Weekend is a joint effort of the cities of Lewiston and Auburn, Bates College, the United Way of Androscoggin County, Community Concepts, Building Materials Exchange, Dead River Company, BIOSAFE Environmental Services, and Pineland Lumber.

Individuals or organizations interested in joining this volunteer effort may contact Mark McComas, city of Lewiston, at 513-3126 (TTY/TDD, 513-3007), or Hal Barter, city of Auburn, 333-6601, ext. 1332.
