100 years ago, 1909

Considerable excitement was caused in front of Music Hall, Lewiston, last evening, when Manager Callan detected two persons speculating in tickets. They had procured a bunch of reserved seat tickets soon after the box office opened and were on the sidewalk in front of the theatre holding up the patrons and selling the tickets at advanced prices. This is believed to have been the first time this scheme was ever attempted in Lewiston, although it is a common practice in the larger cities.

50 years ago, 1959

The southeast storm which hit Maine over the weekend left many white houses looking as though coffee had been poured down their walls. This was the result of the rain washing a stain from the brown leaves and depositing it on the nearby white walls.

Dr. Walter Lawrence, head of the chemistry department at Bates College, said the stain is the result of some component of the leaves. But, said Dr. Lawrence, it is doubtful if the stain will be permanent.

25 years ago, 1984

Coach Shawn Walsh of the University of Maine hockey varsity will conduct a coaching clinic at Lewiston’s Youth Center and at the Multi-purpose Center Sunday evening, sanctioned by AHA as a Level-One proposition. Announcement of the promotion, in which Walsh will be assisted by either Mike Piette or Jay Leach of his UMO staff, notes the affair will be free with the public invited.
