Irene Comeau
1918 – 2009
AUBURN — On Oct. 25, Irene Beaudoin Comeau, 91, of Lewiston, passed from this world into the eternal one and the loving arms of her Lord and Savior at the Hospice House. She was met in Heaven by her adoring husband and a host of family and friends who had passed into eternity before her.
She was born on Sept. 4, 1918, to Edmond and Alberta Francoeur Beaudoin. She attended Ste. Famille Parochial School through the sixth-grade and continued her education at Frye School and Lewiston High School. From there, she began a 20-year career in the local shoe shops, most notably, Clark Shoe, working there until a few months prior to the birth of her first an only child in 1956.
On June 20, 1942, she had married the love of her life, Gerald, and had become a sister to his brothers and sisters. During the early years of their marriage, they owned and operated the Aroostook Farm Store on outer Lisbon Street. Later she helped out in the fledgling seafood business that Gerry and two of his brothers (Bob and Joe) owned for almost 30 years. She formulated the lobster salad recipe for which Superior Sea Foods became famous.
When her daughter, Claire, was a student at St. Dominic R.H.S., she became involved with the PTFA, chairing the hospitality committee for several years. During those years, she also served on the committee that compiled a cook book of favorite recipes as a fundraiser for the school as well as chauffeured her daughter and friends to innumerable soccer and hockey games.
She did all this while caring for her aging and ill parents. Despite losing Gerry suddenly in 1995 after 53 years of marriage, she remained married to him in heart and soul; having recently celebrated the 74th anniversary of their first date.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Claire and her daughter’s devoted husband, Robert Flint; her brothers-in-law, Marcel (Joe) of Lewiston and Raymond of Scarborough; her sisters-in-law, Lauretta Carbonneau of Lewiston and Annette Plourde of Birmingham, Ala.; their respective spouses and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased into eternity by her husband, Gerald Comeau; her parents; a brother, Raoul, who died in infancy; her brothers-in-law, Robert and Laureat Comeau; their spouses; and her sister-in-law, Florence St. Hilaire.
