100 years ago, 1909

One of the delivery cars of the United Sates Fish Hatchery of Greene Lake, in charge of Superintendent Gill, arrived in Auburn Friday carrying 4,000 trout and 2,000 salmon to be placed in Lake Auburn. J. F. Stanley met the party in Auburn with teams to convey the fish to Lake Auburn. Next week Mr. Stanley will carry salmon and trout to Bar Harbor, Boothbay and Fryeburg, all the fish coming from the Auburn hatchery.

50 years ago, 1959

What can you do when a snooty unsociable and extremely stubborn old owl flies into your home unannounced and uninvited — and refuses to leave?

It happened yesterday to Mrs. Sidney Silverman of Highland Ave., Lewiston. All day long and well into the night, the silent owl stayed, perched proudly atop her mop.

The old bird eventually departed when her nephew arrived at her home with a fencing mask over his face. “Maybe that scared it,” said Mrs. Silverman.

25 years ago, 1984

Stand-up political comedian Mark Russell will appear in Portland on Jan. 10 to kick off festivities for the official dedication of WCBB’s $1.5 million new studio on Lisbon Street, Lewiston.

Russell’s satirical put-downs of bureaucratic fumbling and political pomposity have earned him a national reputation and for nine years have helped make him a favorite performer on the Public Broadcasting Services schedule.
