J. Gerald Burns
1917 – 2009
FARMINGTON — J. Gerald Burns, 92, of Farmington, formerly of Skowhegan, died Saturday, Oct. 31, at Franklin Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 13, 1917, in Skowhegan, the son of John and Annie (Spaulding) Burns. He received his education in Skowhegan schools and married the love of his life, Nioma Fern Ireland on Feb. 11, 1940 in Norridgewock. She predeceased him on Nov. 13, 2003.
For many years, he owned and operated the Gerald Burns Plumbing, Heating and Oil Business in Skowhegan. He was a former member of the Odd Fellows and in his free time enjoyed carpentry, building furniture and puttering at his camp in Rangeley, a place where he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his son, Richard Burns and his wife, Marie, of Farmington; one brother, James Burns of New London, Conn.; two sisters, Barbara Edgerly and her husband, Dana, of Canaan and Sadie Wolfe of Coco, Fla.; four grandchildren, Brandi Baserap and her husband, Mark and their son, Tim Ashmun, Megan Farmer and her husband, Tom and their children, Dylan and Brody, Bethany Cote and her husband, James and Whitney Burns; three stepgrandsons, Mark Robinson and his wife, Deanna and their children, Brooke and Olivia, Jeff Robinson and his wife, Kathy and their children, Courtney and Luke and Trent Robinson.
His family wishes to thank his caregiver, Leah Robbins and also Dr. Armand Auger for his compassionate care and support.
