BUCKFIELD — Selectmen approved Jennifer Therriaut for a three-year seat and Rebecca Perry for a two-year seat on the Planning Board after an open interview.

Selectmen had agreed to interview all committee members more fully and the volunteers had the option to be interviewed openly or in executive session.

Alternate Michelle Casey said she felt uncomfortable in an open interview and opted for a closed session. She was also approved as an alternate.

The Planning Board has been charged with writing a wind power ordinance, and the questions from the board centered on how the prospective members felt on that issue. The applicants said they felt they could be open minded on the wind power issue and would strive for what was best for Buckfield.

The proposal for building three windmills on Streaked Mountain was withdrawn by Kean Project Engineering of Turner, after some opposition by residents.

Planning Board member James Parker, whose property abuts the proposed windmill site, said he didn’t think he had a conflict of interest as described in the recently adopted code of ethics and wanted to sit on the board.

Town Manager Glen Holmes said four of the seven members on the board live within one mile of the windmill site.

Parker has also asked for a moratorium on windmills until the subject can be studied further. That petition received more than enough signatures to be put on a special town meeting set for Saturday, Jan. 9.

Selectman Chip Richardson said he thought Parker had a conflict of interest, as stated in the code of ethics, because he was on the Planning Board and initiated the petition.

A bus trip to the windmill farm in Freedom for the Board of selectmen and other interested persons is scheduled for Nov. 15. The bus will leave the Municipal Building at 9 a.m. and return around 5 p.m. There are 40 seats and anyone wishing to go should call the town office.

In other news, Holmes wanted selectmen to decide how they wanted the sale of Bessey Field to be worded on the warrant for the special town meeting in January. The board agreed they wanted the land put out to bid.

Beekeeper Tony Bachelder, whose land abuts the field has offered $15,000 for removing the lights and $35,000 for the land.

Holmes said the foundation for the sand salt shed has been poured and work is progressing.
