LEWISTON — In unofficial election results Tuesday night, Eugene Dumont was elected as a write-in candidate to represent Ward 3 on the Lewiston School Committee.
Dumont won with 16 votes — nine votes more than his closest competitor, Nina Emmi. In total, the names of more than 40 potential candidates were thrown into the political ring.
City and school officials sought write-in candidates for the Ward 3 spot, since no one ran to replace committee member Dennis Grafflin, who did not seek re-election. The outgoing School Committee member said he tried for the past 18 months to recruit someone to run. The city then sought volunteers interested in becoming write-in candidates.
In the remaining six wards, none of the candidates was contested, and there was one candidate for each spot.
One newcomer is Sonya G. Taylor, who received 789 votes. Taylor replaces Norman B. Prevost who did not seek re-election.
Also new is Paul R. St. Pierre of 12 Ventura St., who received 2,296 votes. Pierre is a School Committee veteran, having served from 1990 to 2002. St. Pierre is replacing Larry Lachance who did not seek re-election.
Additionally, the following incumbents ran without opposition: at-large seat, Leah M. B. Poulin, who received 10,200 votes; Ward 4, James Handy, 1,710 votes; Ward 6, Ronella A. Paradis, 1,880 votes; Ward 7, current Chairman Thomas P. Shannon, 1,570 votes.
Official results will be declared sometime Wednesday.
