LIVERMORE FALLS — A special session of the Livermore Falls High School’s Bagels & Books featuring “Bringing Longfellow to Life” will be held Thursday, Nov. 19 in the library.

“We are reading a biography of Longfellow titled “Longfellow: A Rediscovered Life” by Charles C. Calhoun and the author will be joining us on Nov. 17 for our discussion,” library media specialist Cathi Howell said.

She expects a good-sized crowd to attend the 7 a.m. event because this is the first time they have had the opportunity to have an author join them for their Bagels & Books discussion.

“In fact, this is the first time we’ve had an author visit (Livermore Falls High School) since I have worked here,” she said. “This special session of Bagels & Books is sponsored in part by a grant we received from the Maine Humanities Council.”

Howell is leaving copies of the book at each of the two local public libraries in Livermore and Livermore Falls for community members to have access to and she has some additional copies available at the school if community members are interested in reading the book and joining the discussion that morning.

Bagels & Books is a book discussion group Howell started at the high school and is open to students, faculty members and community members. It is designed to promote literacy within the school and community, Howell said.
Each member gets a copy of the featured book, free of charge, to keep or pass on to someone else to read.

Longfellow author and scholar Charles Calhoun will join in the discussion and also meet with two groups of students at the school later that morning to discuss Longfellow’s life, his writings, and the times he lived in, Howell said.

“Calhoun will also share with the students his experiences in researching and writing about Longfellow,” she said.

Interested community members may contact Howell at 897-3428, ext. 211, or [email protected], or teacher Susan St. Pierre at 897-3420, ext. 111,or [email protected].
