100 years ago, 1909

A small crowd daily watches the work of the crew repairing the Grand Trunk bridge over the canal just below Lincoln Street. The men are often balanced on the narrow girders or astride them using both hands to turn a giant wrench, and apparently paying no attention to the swift current below them. One span has already been completed and the large girders for the others are in place. 

50 years ago, 1959

Lewiston baker Frank Chiaravelotti last night petitioned the Zoning Board for permission to install an oven and accessories in his Lewiston home for the purpose of conducting a “wholesale delivery” business.

Chiaravelotti is asking for the green light to install a “baker’s oven and accessories” for the purpose “of baking rolls to be distributed over certain areas of Lewiston.” Chiaravelotti told the board he would “do this on the side and deliver to the homes.” He did not think there would be any objections from land abutters. 

25 years ago, 1984

INDIANAPOLIS — Lightweight Joe Gamache of Lewiston, the silver medalist at the 1984 Golden Gloves, posted a unanimous decision over Gilbert Mitchell of Minneapolis, Minn., the current Interservice titlist in the 1984 United States-Budweiser Boxing Championships.

Gamache has to win two more bouts to claim the title in his division. The competition moves to Market Square Arena for semifinals Thursday and championships Friday.
