LIVERMORE FALLS — A Rumford man was arrested early Saturday after he entered a Tucker Road home while occupants were sleeping and sprayed a man with pepper spray and attacked him with a hammer, according to police.

“The suspect and victims were known to each other but police are not releasing a motive at this time,” Livermore Falls police Lt. Thomas Gould said.

Officers Stephen Allen and Robert Samson responded to a possible domestic disturbance about 1:30 a.m. at the residence. Tucker Road is near the Wayne line.

Tony A. Gilks, 28, was arrested on charges of burglary, aggravated assault, criminal use of disabling chemicals and refusing to sign a uniform summons, Gould said.

Gilks remained in the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn on Monday morning being held on $2,500 cash bail. He also was being held without bail in connection to a federal probation violation.

When the officers arrived Saturday morning, they located Gilks outside of the home.

“It was learned that the occupants of the home were inside sleeping when the assailant entered,” Gould said. “A male inside the home was sprayed with pepper spray, then beaten with a hammer in the head and torso.”

A woman in the home was also sprayed with pepper spray, Gould said.

“A 2-year old-child was in the room at the time but did not appear to have been injured,” he said.

The injured man received lacerations to the head, a concussion and contusions on his torso, Gould said. He was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington and was released later Saturday, he said.

The injuries to the head were severe enough to require staples, police Chief Ernest N. Steward Jr. said.

Allen is continuing to investigate the case and will be bringing more charges as a vehicle parked in the yard was badly damaged with the hammer during the incident, Gould said.
