Alice Ellen Gray Sanborn

1933 – 2009

WALES – Alice Ellen Gray Sanborn, 76, of Pond Road, Wales, died late Wednesday evening, Nov. 11, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born April 24, 1933, in Gardiner, the daughter of Carroll A. and Rita E. (Pettee) Gray. Alice attended Gardiner High School, graduating in 1950. She also attended Auburn Maine School of Commerce, graduating from there in 1952.

On May 4, 1957, in Gardiner, she married George A. Sanborn from Wales. George and Alice celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Leeds Church hall in 2007. She worked as an executive secretary for Rural Community Action Ministry, an accountant for Central Maine Power, and a Project Administrator at Bates College for 22 years, retiring from Bates in 2003.

Alice was a member of the Wales Presbyterian Church, having served as Elder, Deacon, Sunday school teacher, treasurer and financial secretary. She also worked with the Girl Scouts, played saxophone in a band and sang in a choir. She belonged to the Couples Club that went out to eat every Friday night and loved playing cards, gardening, reading and taking trips to Camden in June.

She is survived by her husband, George of Wales; two daughters, Julie E. Sanborn of San Diego, Calif., and Catherine S. Roy of Wales; a son, Brian A. Sanborn of Eliot; a brother, Paul W. Gray and his wife, Cynthia, of Gardiner; a step brother, Robert O. Gray and his wife, Lyn, of Hallowell; a step-sister, Betty Isele of Saranac Lake, N.Y.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Allana Sanborn and Kristin Sanborn. Alice also leaves behind Rusty, her beloved cat.
