Rosaire J. Fortier
1920-2009
AUBURN — Rosaire J. Fortier, 89, of Auburn, died Thursday, Nov. 12, at “his home,” Clover Manor, after a brief illness.
He was born on August 14, 1920, in Lewiston, the son of Hilaire and Elisa (Cote) Fortier.
In 1938, as a young man, he enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps and served for two years as a processor and truck driver.
Rosaire joined the Army in 1942 and served his country as a cook in the 297th General Hospital while stationed in the U.S. and England, cooking for as many as 800 soldiers daily until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was a member of The American Legion Post 22 for the last 31 years.
While working at the Androscoggin Mill in 1944, he met and married Olivette Houle, the love of his life for the next 64 years.
Rosaire loved woodworking and became a cabinet maker, even building his own home and furniture which he was very proud of. For most of his career, he was employed at Modern Woodcrafters. He loved to pass on any advice to those learning the trade and willing to listen. Rosaire was a lifetime member of The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.
“Pepere” as he is affectionately known , will always be remembered for his ability to make friends easily and under any circumstances-always making the best of any situation. His kindheartedness was shared with all who knew him.
Rosaire enjoyed attending family gatherings and friendly get-togethers. He took great pride in all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rosaire leaves behind three daughters; Claire Caldwell of Auburn, Doris Bourgoin and husband, George, of Lewiston, and Pauline Belanger and husband, Robert, of Oxford; son, George Fortier of Newport, R.I.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Omer Fortier of Virginia; and a sister, Beatrice Bosse of Lewiston.
Rosaire was pre-deceased by his wife, Olivette, and brothers Eddie Fortier and Bert Fortier.
The family would like to thank the complete staff at Clover Health Care and Living Center for the quality care they provided for our Dad.
