100 years ago, 1909
Between 500 and 600 people gathered at Garcelon Field Saturday afternoon and witnessed one of the cleanest played, most interesting football games of the season between Frye Grammar of Lewiston and Webster Grammar of Auburn. To be sure the players were youngsters but they played good football, both elevens having received excellent coaching. The score of 17 to 0 in favor of the Lewiston team gives them the championship in the series between the two schools.
50 years ago, 1959
Seven communicable disease cases, including a case of paralytic polio, were reported in Lewiston and Auburn during the week ending Nov. 7, according to the State Health Bureau.
The paralytic polio case was reported in Lewiston. The city also noted two cases of whooping cough and one case each of chickenpox, influenza and aseptic meningitis. Auburn had one case of aseptic meningitis.
25 years ago, 1984
Auburn’s Water District has been cited by the state for maintenance of optimum fluoride concentrations during the period from Jan. 1 to June 30.
The Department of Human Services’ Office of Dental Health notified district Superintendent Earle A. Tarr Jr. in October that Auburn was one of 21 fluoridated utilities in the state to receive the Fluoridation Profinciency Award for the period. Auburn was one of only six communities to receive the award for a third time.
