JAY —Verne Leroy Merrow died on Nov. 15 at Franklin Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 20, 1922, in Hartford, the son of Edna and Ray Merrow. He graduated from Canton High School in 1940 and entered the military. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force where he was a mechanic on a B24 Liberator Bomber in the European Theatre.
In 1948, he married Dorothy Tilton and they made their home on a farm in Beans Corner. He worked for the town of Jay, operated a successful dairy and poultry farm and served on the board of the FHA.He will long be remembered for his honesty and work ethic.
Some of his favorite activities included hunting, fishing and gardening.
He is survived by a son, Leroy Merrow of Portland; his daughters, Marguerite, Linda Smith of Jay and her son, Michael MacMahan, Loretta Wentworth of Rockport and her daughters, Julie Dutille and Lisa Holmes, Sheryl Glover of Greensboro N.C. and her children, Kelly Scotto di Carlo, Ryan Glover and Lindsay Glover, and Nancy Merrow of Wilton and her children, Alison Ouellet, Peter Luthy and Kurt Luthy.
He was predeceased by sisters, Irene Maxim, Avis Leighton, Hazel Paradis and Geraldine Gammon; and brothers, Clayton, Kenneth and Gerald Merrow.
