WEST PARIS — The selectmen last Thursday agreed to join with local resident Carol Mills in studying the feasibility of erecting a skateboard park near the town office on Kingsbury Street.
The agreement came after Mills presented her concern for young people who use Main Street in the center of the village to ride their skateboards.
“I’m concerned with kids riding skateboards up and down Main Street from the general store to the railroad tracks. There are a lot of cars coming through there and they ride the boards down the middle of the street. So I’m here to see if you would be interested in considering a skate board park somewhere in town,” Mills said.
She went on to say she has visited the park recently constructed in neighboring Bethel and has learned they have some equipment they would be willing to donate to West Paris and she also is willing to visit other parks to see how they are set up.
“Bethel spent $100,000 on their park and have some equipment they are willing to donate to us if we are interested in building a park here. I think it would be a nice thing to do to give kids a place they can enjoy away from the street and I have found there is a lot interest among the kids and parents,” she said.
The selectmen agreed it would be a good idea to give the kids a chance to use their boards safely and agreed it would be a good project to look into.
“The only thing would be finding a location but there must be some place where one would work,” said Selectman Dennis Henderson.
It was then suggested by Selectmen Wade Rainey that it would be possible to use the skating rink area across the parking lot from the town office.
“We could still use the area for a skating rink during the winter as skateboarding is a summer activity anyway. So we could easily change things around according to the seasons,” Rainey said.
It was then decided that Mills and the board members will study the issue further by talking with other town officials about their parks and costs. Once a study can be completed they will revisit the issue at a later meeting.
