100 years ago, 1909

Old and feeble and carrying a big grip, a woman called the police station last evening and asked for a place to spend the night. “I have money but I can’t get a place to sleep and I thought I had better come down here and get lodging if I could rather than have a policeman bring me,” she said. The woman went on to tell that she had tried one or two rooms at boarding houses and at one local hotel but that they were cold as barns. She was allowed to spend the night in the women’s cell where it was warm even if no bed with a mattress was provided.

50 years ago, 1959

Chief Deputy Leonard A. Gagne of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department turned cowboy yesterday in helping to round up nine stray cows owned by Arthur Barker on Route 126 in Wales.

Gagne said the cows had strayed away from the Barker farm and were on the highway. 

25 years ago, 1984

In the course of a year, the city of Auburn sells about 4,500 hunting and fishing licenses but few of those regular customers have so far taken advantage of the chance to buy their 1985 licenses at 1984 prices.

The 1985 licenses have been on sale since early September, but City Clerk Mary Lou Magno said she is surprised because only 120 residents have taken advantage of the chance to save money.
