Albert W. Penley Jr.
1929 – 2009
SOUTH PARIS — Albert W. Penley Jr., 80, of West Paris passed away on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Maine Veterans’ Home.
He was born in Otisfield, Sept. 1, 1929, the son of Albert Sr. and Marietta Smith Penley. He graduated from West Paris High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Nantahala.
He worked for the Maine Department of Transportation and then as a woodscaler at Penley Mill for many years. He was also a driver for Western Maine Transportation.
He married Charmaine Cummings on Aug. 30, 1959. He was a member of the Deering Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was an usher and chairman of the trustees. He was also a member of the Granite Lodge AF & AM and a past commander of the Ring-McKeen American Legion Post 151 in West Paris.
He was a founding member of the Mollyocket Sportsman’s Club. He enjoyed camping, snowmobiling, horse racing and he was an avid Red Sox fan. He was a licensed auctioneer as well. He had been a volunteer firefighter for the West Paris Fire Department for 34 years.
He is survived by his wife of West Paris; a son, Douglas of West Paris; cousins, Elaine Emery and husband, Norman, of West Paris, Beverly Glines of Norway, Frances Dennett of Gorham, Wayne Penley and wife, Nan, of West Paris, Richard Penley and wife, Wendy, of West Paris and Dwight Smith of Florida.
