HEBRON — Hebron Academy Head of School John King has announced that Emma L. Leavitt has been named a Commended Student in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program.

As a Commended Student, Leavitt placed among the top five percent of more than one million students who took the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. A letter of commendation from the academy and the National Merit Corporation, which conducts the program, will be presented to the senior.

Leavitt is the daughter of Ann Gass and Rick Leavitt of Gray. In addition to maintaining a full academic course load, she was selected by residential faculty at Hebron to be a Student Proctor this year, a position awarded to students who demonstrate leadership, communication skills and the ability to work well with their peers. They are instrumental in managing the school’s Residential Life Program.

Leavitt serves as co-editor of the academy’s student newspaper and captains the girls’ varsity soccer team. She is a four-year member of the Green Key admissions tour guide group, has performed in the all-school musical productions and was elected treasurer of the senior class. As a junior, she was awarded the Harvard Book Prize and the Willard Prize in English.
