PARIS — Police say a coincidence may be the only connection between two vehicles that crashed on Nichols Street within a half a mile of each other over the weekend.

“I don’t know if they’re connected or not. It’s just ironic that two crashes happen within 24 hours of each other and neither car has a plate on them,” Lt. Michael Dailey said Monday.

Police are still investigating the circumstances behind the two separate crashes that occurred on Nichols Street where police found both cars damaged and without license plates.

Paris police officer Nathan Bowie said the first crash occurred Saturday around 6:30 p.m. when a Chevrolet S-10 pickup ran the stop sign at the intersection of Nichols and Alpine streets and went off the road.

The second crash occurred Sunday around 7:30 p.m. when a black Honda Civic went off the road, drove back onto it then rolled over. Bowie said witnesses saw sparks flying as the car rolled on its roof. According to Bowie, the driver told witnesses that he didn’t have a license plate and had to leave the scene. The driver did drop a cell phone from which police say they hope to recover information.

Bowie said the vehicle identification numbers came back as not on file and neither car was roadworthy.
