LEWISTON — When sly ruffian Randle McMurphy finds himself committed to an insane asylum, he sees it as freedom from the fields where h previously worked. But when he finds himself in the tangles of the asylum’s inner workings, his rebellious nature takes over in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” to be performed by Lewiston High School’s drama club on Thursday, Friday and Saturday Dec. 3-5.
McMurphy, played by Scott Gagne, is determined to take down the dictatorial Nurse Ratched (Sarah Patterson) and tries to stir up the rest of the asylum patients to help him. However, Dale Harding (Ryan Dubois), Billy Bibbit (David Carvalho), Scanlon (Ben Speaker), Cheswick (Nate Chaloux), Martini (Chris Poulin) and Ruckley (Matt Lamare) are apprehensive about challenging authority.
McMurphy becomes acquainted with the tall Native American, Chief Bromden (Mike Paradis), who is believed to be deaf and dumb. McMurphy discovers that this big man really does have a voice — the voice of a timid man afraid of meeting the same fate as his father.
It appears as though Nurse Ratched, Nurse Flinn (Rebecca Spilecki), Dr. Spivey (Christopher Belanger) and aides Warren (Justin Fortier) and Williams (Brandon Chaloux) will surpress their patients, but McMurphy decides to throw a party in the dorm. All chaos breaks out when Nurse Ratched discovers the patients accompanied by two prostitutes, Candy (Susannah Wong) and Sandra (Brittany Martin). This leads to Nurse Ratched making some critical, even life-threatening decisions.
“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. in the Lewiston Middle School Auditorium on Central Avenue. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors.
