100 years ago, 1909

Earl W. Marshall, of Auburn, one of the best singers that the state of Maine has ever turned out, in a recent letter to N. L. Mower, his first instructor, tells of some of the recent honors which have been bestowed upon him.

Perhaps the greatest of these is the selection of Mr. Marshall to sing the title baritone role in the opera “La Traviata.” This opera will be produced at the Verdi Theatre in Florence, Italy, where Mr. Marshall is now studying.

50 years ago, 1959

Mrs. Georgette Cain began duties yesterday as secretary to Auburn City Clerk Leon H. Cole. An Auburn native, she is a graduate of the Richard Secretarial School and served in the Women’s Marine Corps from 1955 to 1958, serving as a stenographer at navy bases at Norfolk, Va., and Philadelphia.

25 years ago, 1984

Bates Fabrics Inc.’s $6 million installation of two co-generation boilers in its Canal Street mill topped the list of building permits issued by the Lewiston Department of Code Enforcement in October.

Bates will install two 40,000-pound wood chip-fired boilers to replace two oil-fired boilers that use 1 million gallons of fuel oil annually. Bates will lease its boiler room to an Ohio firm that will sell steam to Bates and electricity generated by the new boilers to Central Maine Power Co.
