I fail to see why the Auburn city councilors should have a problem with Mayor-elect Gleason’s request that they dress appropriately when performing city business.

As elected officials appearing in an official capacity, it seems to me that it would be automatic that one would want to present a reasonably professional appearance. Since at least some of these meetings are open to the public, shouldn’t our representatives want to be seen “putting their best selves forward” in order to achieve maximum credibility with their constituents?

Perhaps the old accepted standards of decorum have gone by the board while I wasn’t paying attention. I hope not.
