NORWAY — The November meeting of Stone-Smart American Legion Auxiliary was held on Nov. 11 with President Thelma Denlinger presiding.

Denlinger reported on Department President Lois Hubbard and Second District President Mary Haveling’s visit to Norway, South Paris, West Paris, Oxford and Buckfield units. Both spoke on membership and homeless veterans. 

Department Americanism Chairwoman Edith Lemieux is asking every unit to send a goodie box or boxes to someone serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. The unit voted to do this. There will be a collection box in post home for anyone to donate small items such as T-shirts, socks, hard candy individually wrapped, personal items or snack.

The unit voted to support three raffles: one for homeless veterans, one for Juniors to help pay their obligations and one for past department presidents projects.

Ellen Snow reported that she has donated many items to Responsible Pet Care, Norway Recreation and Community Concepts.

Barbara Henley will once again do the program for military children and teens. The program gives Christmas gifts to children and teens who have a parent or parents overseas serving their country.

Beulah Ayer will remember shut in members or members in nursing homes with a gift of a plant.

Donations were made to the following: Androscoggin Home Health, Ronald McDonald House, Beals House, Tree of Caring in honor of post veterans and Long Creek Youth Center.

The group voted to remember veterans that are shut in or in nursing homes with a gift of money.

Henley reported on going to the Guy E. Rowe School to visit with teachers with gifts of pencils, crayons and books and explained the “Give Ten Program.” Teachers were also given apples and cookies. Joyce Clifford also was in attendance.

Henley was also at Rowe School to talk to 69 second graders about Veterans Day and why we have Veterans Day, she was joined by retired Marine Dennis Bowden. They talked to students, gave each student a flag and booklet about the flag and had a snack.

The pocket flags have arrived and the unit will soon begin folding and getting them to service members headed overseas.

Unit members will help at Western Maine Veterans Home on Saturday, Nov. 28, at their Christmas gift shop.

Unit members are working on plans for their Christmas Sale. to be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the post home.

The unit will have a December birthday party at WHVM. Marjy Sessions, Ellen Snow and Thelma Denlinger will be serving. 

Preceding the meeting, the post veterans put on a spaghetti and meatball supper with a birthday cake, celebrating the auxiliary’s 90th birthday. Dave Tilley, Arnold Pendexter, Lee Millett and Randy Henley were in charge of the supper.
