Joseph O. ‘Jasper’ Dion
1917 – 2009
LEWISTON – Joseph O. “Jasper” Dion, 92, of College Street, formerly of Winthrop, died Friday, Nov. 27, at Marshwood Health Care in Lewiston.
He was born in Augusta on Nov. 11, 1917, the son of Eugene and Marie Ann (Dostie) Dion. Joseph was a veteran of World War II and was assigned to Co L 263rd Infantry, 66th Division. He participated in action in Northern France and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star medal. He furthered his military career by enlisting in the Maine National Guard and served as an Administrative Assistant in Co E 103rd Infantry RCT in Lewiston. He later transferred to state headquarters in Augusta, and was employed as a Federal Examiner/Auditor. He retired as Chief Warrant Officer (CWO4) after 34 years of military service.
Joseph was married to Connie Milam of Little Rock, Ark., in 1944. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and was chairman of the bingo committee for a number of years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 40, Winthrop, and had served on the board of directors of the Winthrop Federal Credit Union.
He is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Dion of Reno, Nev., and Carolyn
Sacks of Old Orchard Beach; four grandchildren, Jay Sacks of Illinois, Jeff
Sacks of California, Brooke Yarborough of Nevada and Zachary Phillips of Nevada;
two great-grandchildren, Cali and Avery Yarborough of Nevada; two nieces,
Patricia Wilk of Vermont, and Sylvia Vigue of Florida; and a nephew, Eugene Hart
of Florida.
He was predeceased by his wife, Connie Dion in 2004; and a son, Randy Dion in 1992.
