Marion S. Murphy


1912-2009

AUBURN – Marion Sedgeley Murphy, 97, of Schooner Estates in Auburn, died on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, at Hospice House in Auburn.

Marion was born in Disraeli, Quebec, on July 28, 1912, a daughter of Henri and Rose Anna Giguere. Her baptismal name is Marie Ange Caroline and she was the 18th child of 22 children. The Giguere family moved from Canada to Fairfield, Maine in 1920. The Giguere family is a well-known family in the Waterville area. The family was honored in September 2009, at the Franco Festival in Waterville, for their many contributions to the community.

Marion spent her entire adult life in the Lewiston-Auburn area and wintered in Florida for many years. She married Nelson Sedgeley in Waterville on her birthday in 1934. She raised her children, Marlene Sedgeley Miller, Stephen Sedgeley and Carlton Sedgeley in Lewiston and Auburn. Her husband Nelson died in Lewiston in 1966.
Marion married Paul Cody of Lewiston in 1970, Paul died in St Petersburg, Fla., in 1981. She later married Donald Murphy of Rochester, N.Y. They were married in 1987, in St. Petersburg. Donald died in Lewiston in 2005. Marion was once asked the question, on the secret to her longevity, at a family funeral in Canada, her response was, “mariez vous souvent.” Translated, “marry often!”
Marion moved to Schooner Estates in 2006, she was very happy there and was very active in many Schooner events. The family wishes to thank the Schooner staff for their kind support.

Marion is survived by her sister, Estelle Fortin, 102, of Waterville, her sister, Cecile, 98, of Waterville; and her brother, Lionel, 94, of Waterville. Marion is also survived by her daughter, Marlene Miller and her husband, Fred, of Dayton, Ohio, Stephen Sedgeley and his wife, Celine, of Scarborough, and Carlton and his wife, Lucille, of New York City. She is survived by seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Hospice House for giving Marion such wonderful care and comfort in her final days.
