WILTON — Police are investigating the burglary and theft of two boilers and fuel tanks at the tannery building on Routes 2 and 4 in East Wilton, Police Chief Dennis Brown said.

Within the last two or three weeks, someone broke into the building and took the boilers and tanks with an estimated value of $8,000, he said.

The owner discovered the theft and is checking to see if anything else is missing, Brown said. Deed records list Kenneth Bustin as the owner, but there may be others with interests in it, said Town Manager Rhonda Irish.

Officers also responded to a criminal mischief complaint last week when someone tried to cut the lock on the driveway gate leading up to the building, he said.

The tannery opened in the late 1950s and Kroy Tanning Co. closed at the site in 1996.

Anyone with any information about the incidents is asked to call Wilton Police at 645-3876.
