JAY — Signs asking truckers to limit engine brakes use on the roads in town will cost more than $1,300, Town Manager Ruth Marden recently told selectmen.

Residents from the Bean’s Corner area on Route 133 and Route 156 asked selectmen at a meeting in early November to install the signs. Another resident at the other end of Route 133, told selectmen he would like a sign for his area if signs are to be installed at Bean’s Corner.

Selectmen told residents they would have the town manager look into the matter and bring it up at their meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at the town office.

Marden asked the board on Nov. 23 to review the state Department of Transportation recommendations before buying the signs. They would need more than 13 signs to put them at each entrance to the town.

Selectmen in the past have held firm when requests for such signs to limit engine brakes and children playing have come before them, Marden said.

In the case of asking people to please limit the use of engine brakes, it becomes a liability on the town if something happens, she said.

“Before we start something that would be hard to stop, I really think we need to review the recommendation from the experts and proceeds cautiously,” Marden said.

The engine brakes are a piece of safety equipment on the trucks, Marden said.

It isn’t the brakes that make the loud noises, Chairman Steve McCourt said. It is the illegal exhaust systems installed on the trucks, he said.

The cost of an 18- by 24-inch sign is $43.50, if more than 10 are bought, Marden said. That does not include the cost of the post, which public works foreman John Johnson said runs about $22. The lettering on those signs are too small if someone is traveling at 50 miles per hour on the road, Marden said. By the time they could read it, they would be passed it, she said.

Larger signs with 3½-inch lettering run about $61.25, if more than 10 are bought, she said. With the posts and installation, it would be more than $100 each sign, McCourt said.
