LEWISTON — Chris Wilson and Brian Ellis scored 19 points apiece and Alex Gallant added 15 as the Bates College men’s basketball team handed Thomas College its first loss of the season, 90-71, in the Bobcats’ home opener on Tuesday.

Bates (3-1) avenges its season-opening 98-94 loss to the Terriers (4-1) on Nov. 20 in the Keene State Tipoff Tournament.

The Bobcats shot 65.4 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Terriers 39-19, led by Ellis’s eight boards. Bates also dished out 26 team assists, with Wilson coming up with seven.

Jarrad DeVaughn led four Terriers in double figures with 17 points.

Isaiah Brathwaite added 13 points and Antonio Juco and Andrew Duncanson scored 10 apiece. Duncanson also dished out six assists.

Bates 77, Husson 68

LEWISTON — The Bates College women’s basketball team shook off a resilient Husson University team to notch a 77-68 non-conference victory in the Bobcats’ home opener at Alumni Gym on Tuesday.

First-year forward Taryn O’Connell led four Bobcats (2-2) in double figures with 17 points, while Lauren Yanofsky added 11 points, six assists and six blocked shots. Annie Burns had a career-high nine steals to go with nine assists and eight points, and junior Christine McCall grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Bates’ win offset a huge game from Husson senior Shelby Bradford, who scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, including 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting and seven rebounds in the second half. Bradford also had three blocks and three steals. Bethany Sevey was the only other Eagle to score in double figures, with 12. Noelle Lincoln grabbed nine rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists.

Husson outrebounded Bates 53-34 but turned the ball over 33 times, compared to only 16 for Bates.
