FARMINGTON — Registrations for Farmington Recreation Department’s 30th season of Junior Pro Basketball are now being accepted.

Although the deadline was initially set for Dec. 3, the Recreation Department will continue to accept registrations for another week, Assistant Director Joe Nelson said.

The instructional basketball program for girls and boys in grades two through six is an opportunity for children who do not play on travel teams or participate in middle school interscholastic basketball. All games and practices are played in Bjorn Gymnasium at the Community Center on Middle Street.

Participants are separated into two divisions consisting of both boys and girls for balanced competition and to promote equal play opportunity.

Preseason skills clinics will take place Dec. 5 and 12. Division 1 for grades two and three will meet at 1:15 p.m. on those dates only. Division 2 for grades four, five and six will meet at 11:30 a.m. on those dates.

Regular season games start on Jan. 2 and continue through the championship games planned for Feb. 19.

A standard registration fee of $20 is charged to all players with an extra $5 for those whose parents do not pay taxes to the town of Farmington.

A youth sports team jersey is needed and costs $23 if the child doesn’t have one from previous basketball or soccer programs.

A scholarship, in memory of the department’s 1990 Boys Basketball Travel team coach, Alex Strozier, will continue this season. Two dollars from every registration will go to the fund. An anticipated $150 from the registrations will be awarded to a deserving volunteer coach in the program.

Registration forms are available at the Recreation Department office. More information is available by calling the office at 778-3464 or 778-3444 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
