RUMFORD — Police were busy most of the day Tuesday handling four accidents in less than four hours along with regular workloads.
There were no injuries in the accidents but damage estimates topped $6,000, Cpl. Douglas Maifeld said.
A pedestrian was injured in an accident late Monday afternoon and treated for nonlife-threatening injuries at Rumford Hospital, he said.
No citations were issued in the accidents, although police are still seeking the driver of one vehicle involved in a hit-and-run crash.
Weather conditions weren’t factors, Maifeld said. “I don’t know what the problem was.”
Shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, Beverly Crosby, 37, of Mexico, told police someone struck her parked 2003 Chevy Silverado between noon and 4 p.m. in the American Legion parking lot on Congress Street while she was working, Maifeld said. The driver left the scene.
Damage to the Chevy was estimated at $1,000. Police are reviewing footage from nearby business security cameras to help find the suspect vehicle and driver.
At 3 p.m., a 1997 Plymouth minivan driven by Mark Perry, 18, of Rumford, turned off Penobscot Street onto Lincoln Avenue and struck a 2001 Hyundai operated by Patricia Thomas, 36, of Rumford, Maifeld said. Damage to the Hyundai was estimated at $1,000; to the minivan, $200.
At 2 p.m., a 1998 Chevy pickup driven by Becky Simard, 37, of Rumford, entered a parking space at the Marden’s lot off Route 2 and struck a parked 2001 Subaru, operated by Cheryl Martin, 45, of Weld, Maifeld said.
After the accident, Martin drove off, but police were able to find her and the damaged car because Simard got Martin’s license plate number, Maifeld said.
No reason was given in the police report as to why Martin, the victim, left the scene. Damage to her car was estimated at $1,000; none to Simard’s truck.
At 12:24 p.m., Cynthia Gallant, 53, of Roxbury, who was driving a 2004 Subaru station wagon, sideswiped a 2006 Toyota while backing out of a parking space at 210 Lincoln Ave., Maifeld said.
Damage to the Subaru was estimated at $1,000; to the Toyota, which is owned by Daniel Rovnak, 43, of York, $2,000.
On Monday at 4:11 p.m., pedestrian David Eastman, 62, of Rumford, was struck while walking across River Street in the crosswalk by a 2006 Lincoln driven off Morse Bridge on Bridge Street and onto River Street by Joseph Sciaraffa, 87, of Rumford, Maifeld said. According to the police report, Sciaraffa said he didn’t see Eastman. The crosswalk is unlit.
Eastman complained of neck, back and leg pain and was taken by Med-Care Ambulance to Rumford Hospital for treatment, Maifeld said. No charges are expected.
