KINGFIELD — Now settled in a new location, The Ski Museum of Maine will host an open house from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday.

In September, the museum moved from Church Street in Farmington to the second floor at 265 Main St. in Kingfield above the Sugarloaf Sports Outlet, Director Megan Roberts said. Sugarloaf ski area offered the 1,000-square-foot space rent-free.

“We’ve traditionally held an open house on the first weekend in December,” Roberts said. This one will offer guests an opportunity to see many previously undisplayed items, the new, larger accommodations and refreshments.

Along with the advantage of space and free rent, the museum has realized other benefits from the move.

“We’re closer to a large number of skiers who really value the history of skiing,” she said. “People who are shopping the outlet also come in to see the displays.”

Fall weekends have provided a lot of foot traffic through the museum where there is more space for more pairs of boots, display cases and a book section where visitors may sit down and read about the history of skiing, she said.

John Christie’s book, “The History of Sugarloaf,” is available for sale at the museum and a 50-year history of Sunday River, written by Dave Irons, is expected to come out soon, she said.

The museum has expanded its hours and is open seven days a week. Once Sugarloaf opens for the season, more visitors are expected and the museum will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hours Monday through Thursday are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
