BETHEL — Bethel Historical Society Advancement Director James Dock announced recently that the 2009 Annual Fund Campaign includes a $12,000 challenge made possible from two foundations, the Margaret Burnham Charitable Trust and the Sunday River Region Charitable Fund, and two Bethel families.

Any new gifts made to the society in 2009, as well as any increase in the size of the donation from the 2008 campaign, will be matched up to $12,000 by the foundations and families.

In addition, donors who made their first gift to the society in 2008 who renew their contribution at the same amount or at an increased level will have the entire amount of their 2009 gift matched.

“This challenge is a great way to increase one’s support of the society and make every dollar count even more,” said Dock. “Last year it helped us raise a record amount and we expect it will be an incentive for generous giving again this year,” he added.

As one of the largest and most active historical organizations in Maine, the society offers a broad range of exhibits, special events, lectures and other activities for audiences.

In order to maintain the society’s operations and keep it moving forward, the annual fund plays a major role. Support is sought on a national and international level from members and friends living in 45 states and abroad.

Gifts to the 2009 Annual Fund Campaign are welcomed in any amount and can be made on line by going to the society’s Web site, www.bethelhistorical.org.

In order to count for this year’s challenge, all gifts must be received prior to Thursday, Dec. 31, and are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.
