JAY — A Jay man accused of getting out of jail by stealing and destroying bail documents was arrested Thursday without incident at an Otis Street residence in Jay, Franklin County Sheriff’s Lt. Niles Yeaton said.

Benjamin P. Soha, 24, was arrested on charges of escape, violation of conditions of release, failure to appear without bail and failure to appear for a motion to revoke bail, Yeaton said.

Jay police and sheriff’s detectives worked together to apprehend Soha.

A Franklin County grand jury indicted Soha on charges, including escape, on Nov. 24.

Soha is accused of taking bail papers that would have held him without bail and destroying them while at the Franklin County jail in Farmington, a district attorney said previously. Corrections officers were dealing with seven inmates in the booking area after they were returned from court when the papers were taken. A jail video surveillance camera caught the incident on tape, the prosecutor said previously.

Soha returned from court to the Farmington jail with two sets of bail papers. He left bail papers in the pile that allowed him to be released on $500 cash bail on new criminal charges. He was transferred from the Franklin County holding center to the Somerset County Jail in Madison and was released on the cash bail, Yeaton said.
