POLAND — Staff at Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland schools will vote today on whether to accept a plan that calls for taking four unpaid furlough days this school year.
The negotiating team representing the Regional School Unit 16 Education Association and RSU 16 administration agreed earlier this week on a plan for dealing with a $319,500 reduction in state aid this year.
Superintendent Dennis Duquette estimated that the district would save about $175,000 if every employee in the district takes a reduction in pay equivalent to four days’ pay.
Administration will also make cuts totaling $145,500 from the district’s operating budget to meet the reduction in state aid.
Education Association Co-president Laurie Callahan said that after the results of the vote are shared with the association’s 171 members, school administrators and the School Committee will be informed of the vote, either before or during the committee’s meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, in the Poland Regional High School library.
If school staff approves the plan for four furlough days, schools in the three towns will be closed on the four days currently scheduled for staff workshops, so as not to directly cut student class time.
If the furlough days are not approved, the School Committee will act on a reduction-in-force plan that would eliminate about 16 positions.
