WALES — You might have thought Friday’s season opener was being sponsored by Travelocity.
With nearly 100 turnovers between the two teams, there was so much traveling going on that the players might have needed passports by the time the night was through.
Despite the opening-night nerves and a jittery start, Oak Hill was still able to settle down for a 59-38 win over Maranacook.
“It’s really awesome,” said Maggie Sabine, a junior forward. “We’re really happy with the win. We all came out with nerves. We’ve been working hard. Our goal this year is to play hard in practice and play even harder in the games. If we play with intensity in practice, you play even harder in the game.”
Sabine led all scorers with 20 points while sophomore guard Darby Beaulieu added 11 and junior guard Abby Goulet added eight. The Black Bears got eight from Hannah Clough.
While both teams combined for 33 turnovers in the first quarter, the Raiders were able to settle down and build an early lead. Oak Hill even managed to do that in the first quarter with Sabine on the bench with two early fouls.
“I feel like it was just first game jitters,” said Beaulieu. “For a lot of girls, it was their first varsity start. A lot of people were very nervous, but we settled down, pulled it together and pulled ahead.”
The Raiders opened a tie game with a five straight points late in the first for a 13-8 lead. Goulet had five points in the quarter while Gabrielle Green added three. Though Maranacook got within 13-10 on a Hannah Cumier drive, it was the closest the Black Bears would get the rest of the way.
“We’re really deep on the bench,” said Beaulieu of her team’s ability to open the lead with Sabine on the bench. “It doesn’t matter who’s in and who’s out. We just pull it together and pull through.”
In the second quarter, the Raiders took control. They settled down and got into a rhythm. Oak Hill cut down on the turnovers and tightened up the defense. The Raiders ran off 16 straight points to build a 27-10 lead. Maranacook didn’t score its first point until 2:25 remained in the half.
“Realistically, we have one player with any varsity experience,” said Oak Hill coach Tom Morong. “Some of the kids played but it was a sub role last year. Now they’re thrown in as starters. What I liked is when they made a mistake it wasn’t the ‘what happened’ look. It was ‘that was dumb.’ They knew. They realized the mistake they made.”
The Raiders also corrected those miscues. Oak Hill did a better job handling the ball and feeding Sabine in the post. She scored scored nine during the 16-0 run, including seven from the foul line.
“That’s what we were looking for,” said Sabine of play in the post. “My nerves get to me sometimes, but we all calmed down and my team really helped pick me up.”
The Raiders also were able to play better defense and take advantage of Maranacook’s ball handling. The Black Bears had 55 turnovers overall, 36 in the first half.Oak Hill was also able to do it while dipping deep into the bench without losing momentum.
“We really stepped it up,” said Beaulieu. “We realized they were getting travel after travel. If we kept pushing it and scaring them and threatening defensively, they were going to pick up the ball too soon and move their feet.”
Oak Hill had the lead up to 32-14 at the half and 46-25 after three quarters.
