GRAY — A man was shot to death on Whitney Road late Thursday and two men were in custody Friday in connection with the slaying.
Police said Mark White, 45, was shot outside his home at 80 Whitney St. at about 11:30 p.m.
Investigators are describing the killing as a drug-related robbery gone wrong. Police believe a friend of White was the intended victim of the shooting, Maine Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said.
A short time after the shooting, in nearby Cumberland, a car with two men and two young women inside crashed on Orchard Road. Police said the four ran into a nearby field but were tracked down by Cumberland County Sheriff’s deputies.
Among them were Marco Edward Krauthamer of Freeport and Shane Thomas Rackliffe of Chesterville, both 21. Each was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery. Police said they believed Krauthamer and Rackliffe had gone to the Whitney Road home with a plan to steal money and marijuana. Police did not say whether others were at the home when White was shot and killed.
In 2007, Krauthamer became the target of a police manhunt after he escaped from a juvenile correctional center in South Portland. At the time, police said he had a history of fighting and of resisting arrest.
According to court records, Rackliffe has an adult criminal history that includes a conviction for theft in 2007.
Both men were being held Friday night at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland.
White’s body was taken to the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
