Alice R. Smith
1924 – 2009

WEST PARIS — Alice R. Smith, 85, of Otisfield, died Sunday, Dec. 6, at Ledgeview Living Center, where she had resided the past seven months.

She was born in Winchester, Mass., Aug. 12, 1924, the daughter of Lee and Ruth (Lamb) Ralph. She was educated in Winchester schools. She married Robert E. Smith on Sept. 27, 1947 in Winchester.

She worked as a legal secretary in Boston for a time. When her husband opened his photo enlarging business, Smithway Studio, in Somerville, Mass., she worked in the office. They relocated the business to Main Street in Norway in 1975, and she opened a gift shop there as well. They retired in 1985, when her husband’s health began to fail; he died in 1987.

She was a 65-year member of the Rebekahs. She was a member of the East Otisfield Free Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Janet Rugg and her husband, Dennis, of South Paris; three grandchildren, Darryl, Julie and David; and many cousins.
