LEWISTON — A Boston man was charged with murder Tuesday in the shooting death of a Lewiston woman in Dorchester in August.

Amos “Ace” Don, 23, was served a warrant Tuesday afternoon at the Cumberland County Jail, where he was being held on an unrelated charge.

Don was charged in the slaying of 29-year-old Erica Field, a Lewiston woman who had driven to Dorchester with her boyfriend, Shameek “Jo Jo” Garcia; he was also shot but survived.

In the months following the shootings, Lewiston police worked closely with their counterparts in Boston. Police said Don had traveled several times between Boston and Lewiston, before and after the shooting.

On Sept. 29, more than a month after Field was killed, Don was arrested at 977 Lisbon St. and charged with drug trafficking. By then, investigators had begun to suspect him in the slaying, and with the help of other departments, had begun to monitor his movements.

Lewiston police officers Derek St. Laurent and Carley Conley were assigned to the team of investigators working on the case.

Don was released from the Androscoggin County Jail on the trafficking charge. However, in recent weeks, he was arrested in the Portland area and has been held at the Cumberland County Jail since.

“At that point, we were confident there was no longer a threat to the public,” Lewiston police Chief Michael Bussiere said Tuesday.

With Don in jail, police continued to put together their case against him, getting an indictment for murder and arresting him on that charge.

In Boston on Tuesday, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said it would seek to have Don brought back to face the charge there.

He was charged with armed assault in the shooting of Garcia, who police said has regained consciousness in spite of at least one gunshot to the head.

Investigators have described the shootings as a drug deal gone bad.

On the night of Aug. 25, Field was found dead in a rental car parked on Norwell Street in Dorchester, Mass. Next to her, 32-year-old Garcia had been shot several times, police said.

Field, the mother of a sixth-grade girl, grew up in Lewiston and worked at Val’s Root Beer, a drive-in hamburger stand on Sabattus Street.

“We worked on this case as hard as we would have if it had happened in our city,” Bussiere said, adding that St. Laurent and Conley traveled to Boston as they worked with police there. “It was good work all around.”
