NORWAY — The Norway Memorial Library is hosting an exhibit of paintings and prints by Paris, Maine painter, Cynthia Burmeister.
Burmeister developed a love of art and art history while serving as a docent at the University of Michigan Art Museum in Ann Arbor for 20 years. During that time, she took classes in watercolor painting. Since retiring to Maine, she has found more time to devote to her art, continuing the study of watercolor painting with Lee Bean and currently studying oil painting with Murad Sayen.
“I have always loved old houses, so I suppose it’s not surprising that they are my favorite subject to paint. Old buildings are interesting visually and I enjoy thinking about the people who lived in them and created what I see. Norway, Paris and Western Maine have so many wonderful examples of historic buildings. When interesting architecture comes together with interesting light situations, I’m off,” Burmeister said.
She captures the light on architecture through her camera and works from her own photographs while painting.
The exhibit includes some of her paintings of locations in the town of Norway, including the Opera House, a Main Street scene, the old Fletcher’s Candy Store and the Round House.
The exhibit will remain on view through January 2010 and may be viewed any time the library is open. For more information, visit the library’s Web site at www.norway.lib.me.us or call 743-5309.
