The methods of certain persons who are said to be now engaged in canvasing this city for pictures to enlarge and then after the enlargement is made, insist that the owner buy a frame to go with the picture, are being criticised by those who claim they were victims to the scheme. These picture men are believed to be strangers in the city.
50 years ago, 1959
Boldness almost paid off for an unidentified man yesterday afternoon when he tried to trick an Auburn bank.
Shortly before the 3 p.m. closing time, a man walked up to Mrs. Marie Morrell at the Auburn Savings Bank and handed her two rolls of “quarters,” the equivalent of $20.
When Mrs. Morrell picked up one of the rolls, it felt too light. She started to open one of the rolls and the man ran from the bank. Further investigation showed the rolls were not quarters, but washers.

Dwight Edwards, vice president of marketing for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Maine, will speak on “Health Care Cost Containment” when the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club meets Thursday at noon at Steckino’s Heritage House, Lewiston.
A 1966 graduate of Bates College, Edwards joined Blue Cross in 1971 and has held his current position since 1979.
