INDIANAPOLIS — The Boston Red Sox have claimed right-hander Ramon Ramirez on waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays.

And here’s a twist to Wednesday’s move: The Red Sox already have a pitcher on their staff by the name of Ramon Ramirez.

The newly acquired Ramirez was 0-0 with a 3.65 ERA in 11 games for Cincinnati last season. Tampa Bay claimed him on waivers from the Reds in November, then released him last week.

The Red Sox also signed lefty Fabio Castro. He played in the Toronto system last year, going a combined 9-6 in Triple-A and Double-A.

The team announced that the procedure was performed Wednesday by Drs. Brian McKeon and Drew Terrono at New England Baptist Hospital.

No timetable has been set for his return.

The team said Daniels first noticed a problem about two weeks ago, then aggravated the injury in practice on Sunday.

The 6-foot-6 Daniels signed with the Celtics this summer after three years with the Indiana Pacers. He is averaging 5.7 points, 2 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 19 games this season.
