Boys’ basketball

Winthrop 56, Mt. Abram 48
SALEM — A strong start can pay dividends late in the contest. Just ask players on the Winthrop boy’s basketball squad, who jumped out to a 19-11 advantage in the first frame and hung on to record a 56-48 victory over Mt. Abram in a MVC matchup Thursday evening.

Cory Staples and Billy Gordon led the Ramblers with 15 points apiece, while Andy Emery added 13. The Roadrunners (0-3) actually outscored their opponent in the second frame but came up short in the end.

Jim Barker paced Mt. Abram with a game-high 21 points, while Jarrod Blodd chipped in with 10.  

Girls’ basketball

Dirigo 36, Boothbay 17
DIXFIELD – Dirigo used a 18-3 run in the second frame to pull away from Bothbay and hung on for a convincing 36-17 victory in local girl’s basketball action Thursday.

Hannah Knight led the Cougars (2-1) with eight points, nine rebounds and three steals. Tricia Turner also contributed for Dirigo with five points and four steals.

Boothbay (0-2) was paced by Kristin Sibley, Elana Peters and Meryl Jones with four points each.
