100 years ago, 1909

Breeding skunks is rather a new industry in this state, but nevertheless it is a paying one for George Crooker of North Bath who has a colony of 20 polecats. The fur is used largely in the manufacture of coats and fur pieces and Mr. Crooker is busy catching the animals for his yard. He has fenced in a 50-foot ledge with a high wire and the little animals seem perfectly content with their new home.

50 years ago, 1959

Hood’s Mailers continued their winning ways on the basketball court last night by racking Randolph AA 100 to 55 in an uneven contest at the Auburn Armory. The Mailers take on the Farmington Brown Bombers on the same surface Wednesday night.

Eddie Williams and Joe Johosky set the pace for the hosts with 24 points each.

The Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce will stage its traditional public reception for Androscoggin County legislators on Dec 28 at Steckino’s restaurant’s Heritage Room.

Chamber Executive Vice President William C. Harkins said both Chamber members and nonmembers are being encouraged to attend the social function at which the 19 area legislators will be honored.

There will be brief remarks by leaders of the Chamber and the legislative delegation.
