RUMFORD — The Veterans Health Administration’s months-long search for a new clinic site to the River Valley appears to have been ended.
Togus VA Medical Center Associate Director Ryan Lilly said Monday that a contract has been offered to the owners of the River Valley Crossing Shopping Center on Route 2 for the last vacant section of the complex. Federated Realty Five LLC is the owner of the shopping center and is part of The Federated Companies out of Boston.
A tentative agreement calls for a five-year lease with the option to continue with five, one-year increments, Lilly said.
Jonathan Rauch, spokesman for Federated Realty Five, said via e-mail Monday afternoon that the complex will be 100 percent occupied, and that his company has a signed lease with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The only thing that could hold up the plan is an injunction lodged against the awarding of the contract by New Hampshire’s Estherhill Boat Corp., which is the owner of the Franklin Street site in which the clinic is now located, Lilly said. Estherhill was one of several companies that submitted a bid for a new local veterans clinic site, he said.
Lilly said the injunction will be settled in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., next week. Attempts to contact the owners of Estherhill were unsuccessful.
If all goes as planned, Lilly said the clinic will move into the 8,000-square-foot former supermarket by March 1. It would be next to the Sears franchise. Other tenants at the site are Marden’s, Olympia Sports, Dollar Tree and Motion Industries.
The biggest selling points for the proposed new site are it is on one floor and has plenty of parking. The new site is also about 2,000 square feet larger that the Franklin Street site.
Lilly said the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ crew will supply the labor needed to renovate the new site.
The west end of the River Valley Crossing Shopping Center is expected to be renovated for the Rumford veterans clinic by March 1 under an agreement between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Federated Realty Five LLC. Once the move is made, the shopping center on Route 2 will be filled.
