LEWISTON — Lewiston Councilors-elect Mark Cayer, Ward 6, and Stephen “Steve” Morgan, Ward 7, attended a Maine Municipal Association Elected Officials Workshop on Dec. 3. Cayer and Morgan were elected as Lewiston City Councilors in November and will take office on January 4, 2010.
The workshop was held for newly elected and veteran officials alike, and Lewiston’s councilors-elect found it very educational. Workshop topics included Municipal Government Authority, Duties and Responsibilities of Municipal Officers, Freedom of Access Act, Public Proceedings, Executive Sessions and Permitted Subjects and Conflict of Interest.
Cayer said, “I found the workshop to be informative and a great refresher in the basics.”
Morgan said, “It was very rewarding. Anything we can learn about public policy through engagement with the Maine Municipal Association is a bonus not only for city councilors but for the city as well.”
The Maine Municipal Association is a voluntary membership organization offering an array of professional services to municipalities and other local governmental entities in Maine. It has a core belief that local government is a fundamental component of a democratic system of government and is dedicated to assisting local governments, and the people who serve in local government, in meeting the needs of their citizens and serving as responsible partners in the intergovernmental system.
Their services include advocacy, education and information, professional legal and personnel advisory services, and group insurance self-funded programs.
Cayer also said that for other elected officials who may be interested, additional workshops will be offered in the future.
