100 years ago, 1909

A quantity of lead pipe, nearly 200 pounds in all, was found yesterday morning by officers hidden beneath the rear of an old shed on Lincoln Street. The pipe, upon investigation, was found to have been stolen from the store house of Hall & Knight on Canal Street.

50 years ago, 1959

A Lewiston dentist told the Board of Health and Welfare yesterday that fluoridation of its water system is “about the nicest and best thing a town can do for children” in the area of dental hygiene.

Dr. Raymond C. Sirois, who specializes in children’s dentistry, also told the board that more than 35 million people in about 2,000 communities across the country are using fluoridated water today and predicted that eventually every town and city will have it.

25 years ago, 1984

Central Maine Medical Center has expanded its closed-circuit television surveillance system to include a video camera that monitors activities in the hospital’s parking lots, according to CMMC Security Director Max Ashburn.

The video camera that has been installed on the Memorial Wing roof is equipped with a “light-gathering” Starlight zoom lens that can “see” as clearly at night as it does during the day, Ashburn said. The zoom capability of the lens allows security officers to read the license plate numbers on cars parked 300 yards away.
