LEWISTON — Many of the names and faces have changed in the defensive rotation for the Edward Little girls’ basketball team, but the results, thus far, have been the same.

The Red Eddies defense took advantage of a young and inexperienced Lewiston team to remain unbeaten with a 65-24 win over the Blue Devils. EL used a combination of eight 3-pointers overall and forced 26 turnovers in the first half to roar out to a commanding lead.

“I loved how well we shot our 3’s, and I loved how well we played defense in the first half,” said EL coach Craig Jipson. “We only gave up four baskets. To win in our league, we have to play great defense, and I thought our defense was strong.”

EL was even playing without, Miranda Martin, one of its best post defenders. She’s out with a knee injury while Ashlee Arnold is still out of action with a concussion.

“We’re into our rotation a little bit and kids are coming up big,” said Jipson.

Kirsten Prue led EL (3-0) with 27 points, including four 3’s. Frankie Lally added 14 points and four 3’s of her own. Kayla Cumming was also in double figures with 11 as EL had eight different players produce points. Lewiston got nine from Atong Reyak and seven from Kenzie Sullivan.

Lewiston (0-3) has just a handful of players that saw any kind of varsity action last year. That inexperience showed as EL forced numerous turnovers and put the Blue Devils behind immediately.

“We did turn the ball over,” said Lewiston coach Mike McGraw. “That’s something we’re going to have to work out of. It’s going to be a long process.”

EL had spurts of five, eight, nine and 13 points in the first half to open up the commanding lead. A pair of 3-pointers by Lally in the first was part of the 8-0 run that followed a 5-0 start. After two Prue free throws and a Dawna Daigle rebound, EL was up 17-4 after the first quarter.

Prue started the second with a 3-pointer and Cummings hit a pair of free throws to make it 22-4. Lewiston got a 3-pointer from Sullivan and a jumper from Jaime Swart, but EL came back with 13 straight, including 3-pointers from Prue and Lally.

“I like how we didn’t get rattled in the beginning when we struggled a little bit,” said Jipson, whose club is ranked second in Eastern A. “We’re going to go through some runs where our outside shots don’t fall. You play for that run when you can hit two or three in a row.”

Lewiston played hard and executed nicely at times but just didn’t have the experience to do it consistently.

“I did see some things that we did well, but it didn’t happen enough,” said McGraw. “They’re trying, but we’ve got three sophomores that should be playing JV that I said, ‘Here you go, here’s your driver’s license for varsity Class A.’ It’s not easy. We’re going to go through some growing pains. God bless kids like Tricia (DeFosse), Kailey (Martin) and Jaime. They’ve battled adversity every year.”
