WINTHROP – Senior guards Hannah Knight and Jane Hebert shared game-highs of 14 points to power Dirigo to a 48-33 victory over Winthrop in MVC girls’ basketball action Saturday.
The Cougars (5-1) jumped out to an early 13-4 advantage in the first quarter, and continued to outplay the Ramblers (3-3) in the opening stanza. Knight made seven field goals, while Hebert tossed five field goals, including one from 3-point range, and three free throws.
Senior forward Kelsey Ouellette led the scoring for Winthrop with six field goals, including one from 3-point range, for 13 points.
Edward Little 73, Brewer 21
AUBURN – Edward Little raced to a 35-8 advantage by halftime and coasted to a 74-21 victory over Brewer in an KVAC girls’ basketball game Saturday.
Kayla Cummings scored 23 points to surpass Brewer’s total. The Witches (2-4) only converted five field goals and no player had more than one.
The Red Eddies (5-0) outscored Brewer 18-0 in the final quarter.
Kirsten Prue chipped in with 17 points, while Francesca Lally drilled four 3-pointers for 12 points and Crissy Lewis also hit double figures with 10 points.
Livermore Falls 43, Monmouth 16
LIVERMORE FALLS – Sophomore guard Kathryn Ventrella netted a game-high 12 points to lead Livermore Falls to a 43-16 rout over Monmouth in MVC girls’ basketball action Saturday.
Ventrella came out scoring quickly for the Andies (3-3), making three from three point range along the way. Livermore Falls took a 25-9 lead into intermission.
Junior center Marissa Welch contributed four field goals for eight points, and hauled down eight rebounds for the Andies.
Kristine Kahl was the leading scorer for the Mustangs (1-5) with nine points on three field goals and three free throws in the losing effort.
Bangor 46, Lewiston 29
BANGOR – Hillary Thruckmorton scored 13 points and Bangor’s defense held Lewiston to single-digit scoring for four quarters as the Rams glided to a 46-29 victory over the winless Blue Devils in a girls’ basketball game Saturday.
At the end of the first half, Bangor held a 27-12 lead. For Lewiston (0-6), Jaime Swart scored the team-high nine points.
Fryeburg 61, Poland 23
FRYEBURG – Ariel McConkey outscored the opposition by herself with 28 points as Fryeburg Academy knocked off Poland, 61-23, in Western Maine Conference girls’ basketball action Saturday.
Brylie Walker added 11 points for the Raiders (3-3), who outscored the Knights, 27-6, in the second quarter to put the game away early.
Morgan Copp had six points to lead Poland (1-5).
Oxford Hills 54, Mt. Blue 25
PARIS – Lindsay Fox led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points as Oxford Hills jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 54-25 victory over Mt. Blue in KVAC girls’ basketball action Saturday.
Brooke Ladd (nine points) and Caitlin Hanley (eight points) combined to hit five 3-pointers for the Vikings (2-4). Chelsea Thompson had 11 points to lead the Cougars (0-5).
Jay 50, Lisbon 38
LISBON – Senior forward Alexis Blodgett drained a game-high 18 points to propel Jay to a 50-38 victory over Lisbon in MVC girls’ basketball action Saturday.
Blodgett turned up the tempo in the third quarter for the Tigers (4-1), scoring four of her five 3-point field goals during a 24-16 run. Senior Mallory Bonnevie acted as a human foul magnet. She went 12-of-16 from the foul line, and collected six assists to go along with her 14 points. Beth Moore hauled down a game-high 16 rebounds for the Tigers.
Senior forward Renee Moore recorded the only double-double in the contest, tabulating 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Greyhounds (4-1).
Madison 45, St. Dom’s 36
MADISON – Ali Russell scored the team-high 17 points and Andrea Smith added another 10 as Madison dismissed St. Dom’s with a 45-36 victory in a girls’ basketball game.
The Bulldogs (4-2) erupted for 23 points in a key second quarter after scoring just five in the first. Madison went 9-for-11 at the foul line in the second stanza. The Saints struggled to put 15 points on the board in the first half.
For the Saints (3-2), Allaina Murphy scored the game-high 21 points and sank the only 3-pointer of the game.
Hockey
Leavitt 5, Biddeford 2
AUBURN – Jamie Thibeault, Kara Violette and Shelbea Russell each tallied a goal and an assist as Leavitt survived a penalty-marred contest to knock off Biddeford, 5-2, in girls’ ice hockey action.
Despite being whistled for 11 penalties, the Hornets held the Tigers without a power play goal. In fact, they scored two short-handed goals, one by Kayla Royer in the second period and one by Russell late in the third.
Theresa Waterbury had the other goal and Bri Stanley stopped 14 shots in net for Leavitt (3-2). Sara Grover had a goal and an assist for Biddeford (4-3).
