FARMINGTON — A Mt. Blue Middle School student was expelled by the school system’s Board of Directors on Tuesday for his part in dropping a mixture of chemicals into a school toilet.

The student was expelled for bringing the materials to school, Assistant Superintendent Susan Pratt said of Regional School Unit 9 based in Farmington.

The student admitted bringing materials to school to create explosive devices, one of which was set off on the school building, according to the board’s meeting minutes.

Earlier this month, police were called to the school after two students set off a mix of two chemicals in a bottle causing an expansion that blew up the plastic bottle but caused no damage to the toilet or bathroom.

Police and school officials decided to leave disciplinary action up to the school. Only one student appeared before the board Tuesday, she said.

The board found the conduct of the student endangered the facilities, students and staff. They decided expulsion was necessary for the peace of the school.

The student can apply for readmission at any time but typically the board looks at the student’s behavior in the interim, she said.

In other business, the board gave a 40-day suspension to a Mt. Blue High School student who admitted bringing alcohol to the school and sharing it with other students. The student will also have to participate in screening, counseling and sign the high school principal’s disciplinary contract.

A second Mt. Blue High School student also received a 40-day suspension for his/her part in furnishing a beverage containing alcohol to another student.

The board readmitted a high school student who was previously expelled for smoking marijuana, she said.

After the student stated he/she would not smoke again and met conditions set at the time of expulsion, the board agreed to reinstate the student.
